The Anne and Max Tanenbaum Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto (TanenbaumCHAT) provides a comprehensive, premiere Jewish experience. Our graduates emerge with knowledge and courage to impact the world around them.

Our objective in the hiring of the Shlichim is for them to infuse רוח ארץ ישראל at every opportunity. There are a lot of “natural” fits for this to happen and we are hoping for them to create new initiatives as well. The nature of the bulk of the work will be working with students and staff to bring new and innovative Israel engagement ideas to TanenbaumCHAT.

The Shlichim will report to Principal or Vice-Principal and will work in close partnership with the Directors of Student Activities.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Main Duties:
  • Fostering a connection between our students and the people of Israel (making connections with schools, organizations and Israeli teenagers)
  • Infusing Jewish holiday celebrations (e.g. Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Tu B’Shevat, Purim, etc...) with a connection to Israel
  • Working with student clubs to explore ways of connecting them to similar clubs in Israel
  • Attending all shabbatonim and enhance the experience with the spirit of Israel
  • Supporting the specifically Israel-related student clubs (e.g. Israeli Affairs Committee, Israel Advocacy Club etc.
  • Helping plan the Israeli chagim (Yom Hazikaron, Yom Ha'atzmaut, Yom Yerushalayim) and Israel-or Hebrew- related days (e.g. Yom Ivrit, Shavua Yisrael etc...)
  • Supporting the effort to increase the percentage of students spending a gap year in Israel
  • Increasing awareness of current events in Israel
  • Creating an “avira yisraelit” (Israeli environment) in hallways with posters, music, decorations
  • Providing curricular support in areas where appropriate (e.g. in Ivrit, Jewish History, Israeli Culture, Rabbinics, etc...)
  • Offering periodic lunch and learn sessions for staff
  • Working with Hillel shlichim and other campus professionals to ensure a good “hand-off” from TanenbaumCHAT to university life
  • Working with Shinshinim to enhance their participation in student life at TanenbaumCHAT
  • Collaborating with staff and student to bring new and innovative Israel engagement initiatives to TanenbaumCHAT
